“People have different types of hair issues. People have different types of life's issues. There may be genetic issues, medical issues, social issues, tragic, stress related or injury related issues that cause hair loss as well as scalp damage. It’s so broad spectrum! As our exterior self-experiences trauma, so does our interior self. This is better referred to as emotional damage. In turn, this may cause issues with low self-esteem, an even greater level of damage by incorrectly or unprofessionally addressing an issue. My area of expertise not only helps treat these issues, but allows you to remain beautiful while making transitions into your desired look. Making people happy is our business. As Cosmetologist, we have a responsibility to serve.
The Beauty Industry requires much more than beautiful hair. We have the ability to help people heal through our gift. Our area of artistry is needed everywhere. We have to live the industry that we love and love the industry that we live." - Nickie Wooten
FLORIDA STATE CAPTAIN: "REGULATION KEEPS US RELEVANT"
Nickie Jenkins-Wooten wears several beauty industry hats: Cosmetology Educator and Director of Regency Beauty Institute in Jacksonville, FL; Owner of Posh & Clever Concept Boutique, and advocate for her fellow industry members in Florida (and beyond) as a PBA State Captain! Once she joined her fellow 200 Captains nationwide, Nickie hit the ground running, sharing important deregulation information with her Regency Beauty CEO and directors in 9 different states. One of her biggest goals is to encourage awareness of industry issues among licensed professionals, but most importantly with future professionals and students. “I feel that we have an urgency to reach students while they are open to learn initially how to contribute to our industry effectively,” said Nickie. “What prompted you to get involved in advocacy?”
Being absolutely in love with cosmetology, while realizing that our industry suffers tremendously from individuals and businesses participating in and supporting unlicensed activity, provokes my desire to be an advocate. Though we may not currently face the same challenges of deregulation as our sister states, it won’t be so far removed if the respect, loyalty and celebration of our earned level of artistry does not increase.
“What is the most satisfying part of advocating for the beauty industry?”
Personally, I gain the satisfaction of knowing that I am in a position to assist in paying homage to the foundation as well as being a vessel in securing the future of our industry. Being an educator and director at Regency Beauty Institute, I am able to touch lives by promoting the positives and endless possibilities that our industry has to offer, at a level where student’s minds and hearts are open and accepting. If we can consistently display professionalism and integrity enhanced by our creativity in the art of cosmetology, our up and coming artists will take this mentality and character into the industry at their joining. This character will provoke a positive, creative and energetic industry culture. We have to live the industry that we love and love the industry that we live to keep it thriving and well.
“Why is it important for industry professionals to stay informed and act on legislation affecting our industry?”
Ignorance warrants unnecessary sacrifices. If we are thoroughly informed of what the expectations as well as challenges concerning our industry involve, we can be proactive. With sound knowledge, and ignoring hearsay, we can strategize together to increase the industry’s influence. Any industry that is well-respected is protected by laws and rules. Legislation is not a negative thing; it’s actually a huge part of the core that fosters the validity and vitality of an industry. While following the laws and rules, it makes our jobs easier. Regulation keeps us relevant.
“Why do you think it’s important for professionals and future professionals to be proactive in advocacy?”
Being proactive keeps us informed, relevant and protected. We as the professionals have to work together to make the change by not ignoring what is happening and being professional, not only creative. It’s our professionalism and education that sets us apart. If you aren’t aware of a concern, then you can’t help. If you are aware of a concern and you wish to remain titled a professional, it’s your obligation to be proactive in advocacy. So let’s raise the bar and save our industry…together!
